Father's Day was the conception of Sonora Dodd who in 1909 decided to instigate the celebration to honor her father. (1913) POSTCARD: Norris Dam by Night - Tennessee - Linen. - Condition: Excellant. - Not Posted. Picture is of the TVA Dam constructed on the Clinch River in North East Tennessee. The project was begun in October 1933 and finished in March 1936. It is a straight concrete gravity-type dam, 1860 feet long, 265 feet high, and 208 feet thick at the base, equipped with two 50,000-kilowatt generators. Total cost of construction, including acquisition of reservoir lands, was about $36 million. The project relocated approximately 2900 families and caused the removal of over 5,000 gravesites. Picture of the factory with "A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year" printed in cursive on the side of the card. Evidently was a company Christmas Card. Abraham and Straus was founded in 1865 as Wechsler & Abraham. In 1893 The Straus Family who was connected to Macy's Department Stores bought Joseph Wechsler's interest and the company acquired the name of Abraham and Straus. In 1995 the name was dropped. In 1893 an article stated that there were about four and 1/4 miles of shopping floor within five stories, a basement and a cellar. It also stated that the firm had the largest private electric plant in the world! There were 1,600 employees and had an average of 40,000 shoppers visit each day! Quite a store for the times. (763) POSTCARD: A Mimosa Inn - Tryon, NC-Condition: Very Good.- Tinted Illustration, Circa 1920. Not Posted. Published by Asheville PostCard Co. Built in 1903, the Mimosa Inn has been a landmark and social gathering place in this area for more than a century. In 1903 the Mimosa Hotel expanded by adding a separate 10,000 square foot 2 story "casino" building which included two bowling alleys, club rooms with billiard and pool tables and a ballroom with a vaulted ceiling which took up the entire second floor. In 1916 the main hotel building burned to the ground, leaving only the 4 chimneys standing. In an effort to carry on the tradition the "casino" was remodeled into what is now the Mimosa Inn.Price: $4.00 + shipping.
