Cabinet Photographs

CABINET PHOTOS:
Cabinet photos become very popular when the fascination with CDV's began to wane. The cabinet photo was a larger photo measuring about 4" by 5 1/2" mounted to a cardboard around 4 1/4" by 6 1/2". These photos were most popular from around 1870 to 1900. The last of the cabinet photos date to the 1920's. Cabinet photos are very collectible both for the subject including good examples of types of dress, family units, and common objects often found in the photos and for the imprinted photo company names often found in decorative script on the back of the cardboard.

Carte de Visite cards were popular before the larger Cabinet Cards became the rage. These photos were smaller, and were popular from around 1859 up to 1906. They were mounted on stiff cardboard.
