PLYMOUTH THEATRE: Built in 1917 by the Shubert Family. Leased for a few years to producer Arthur Hopkins. Durring the depression the theatre reverted back to the Shubert family which still has it today. It was designated as a New York City Landmark in December of 1987.
THE MUSIC BOX THEATRE: At the end of 1919 Sam H. Harris asked Irving Berlin to devise a musical revue. Berlin wrote The Music Box Revue and in 1920 The Music Box Theatre was built to house the show. The Shubert family obtained half ownership in 1941 (shared with Berlin). In 2007 Berlin's share of the theatre was sold to Shubert. It was built in the neo-Georgian style in the manner of a country home.
MARK HELLINGER THEATRE: Opened in 1930 as the movie palace, Hollywood Theatre. Thomas W. Lamb designed the theatre for the Warner Brothers. It is done in a baroque style with grand staircases. Live shows made their presentations in 1934 and it was called the 51st Street Theatre. The name changed back and forth over the next 20 years. ST. JAMES THEATRE: Was built by Abraham L. Erlanger who was a producer. It was built on the site of the original Sardi's restaurant and opened in 1927 under the name of The Erlanger. In 1930 the Astor family took over the theatre and renamed it the St. James. The Shubert family purchased it in the late 1930's and sold it to William L McKnight in 1957.
IMPERIAL THEATRE: The theatre was built as a replacement for the Shubert's out of date Lyric Theatre. First production was in 1923 (Mary Jane McKane). It was designed by Herbert Krapp in the Adam-style.
ALVIN THEATRE: This theatre is now known as the Neil Simon Theatre. It was built in 1927. It was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and was named Alvin Theatre. It opened on November 22, 1927 with Funny Face starring Fred and Adele Astaire. It was used as a radio station for a period of time. It was renamed the Neil Simon Theatre in 1977. It was designated as a New York Landmark in 1985.
46TH STREET THEATRE: Is now known as the Richard Rodgers Theater. It was opened in 1924 and designed by Herbert J. Krapp. It was renamed in 1990.
WINTER GARDEN THEATRE: This theatre is the oldest theatre owned by Shubert. It occupies the second American Horse Exchange and was built by William Vanderbilt in 1896. Shubert leased the exchange in 1911 at which time Winter Garden Theatre was born. It was used as a movie house from 1928 to 1933 and again in 1945.
BELASCO THEATRE: This theatre was designed by George Keister for impresario David Belasco. The sumptious interior featured Tiffany lighting and murals by Everett Shinn. It opened at the Stuyvesant Theatre in 1907. In 1910 Belasco changed the name to his. There were legends about Belasco's ghost haunting the theatre after his death in 1931.
BROADHURST THEATRE: George Broadhurst built the theatre in 1918 in association with the Shubert Brothers. The theatre's architect was Herbert Krapp. It was built back to back with the Plymouth Theatre. It is still one of the most popular theatres in New York.
THE BROADWAY THEATRE: This theatre is one of only 5 theatres that is actually on Broadway. It opened in 1924 as B.S. Moss's Colony, a film house. Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie was shown there in 1928. It became a stage theatre from 1930 to 1934 and was re-named The Broadway Theatre. From 1934 to 1940 it again became a movie house, returning to the theatre after 1940.
THE MARTIN BECK THEATRE: This theatre opened in 1924 at 302 West 45th Street. It was designed by architect G. Albert lansburgh. It premiered the famous Bye Bye, Birdie and presented revivals of Kiss Me Kate and Guys and Dolls. The Martin Beck was renamed for the famous caricaturist Al Hirschfeld in 2003.
